The former Springbok and Bulls loose-forward selects a team of the best he played with and against for SA Rugby magazine.

15. Chris Latham

I used to pride myself on defence. The first missed tackle I had in Super Rugby was on this guy.

14. Bryce Heem

My ex-Warriors teammate who is playing for Toulon next season. He’s a remarkable talent who New Zealand rugby has ostensibly missed.

13. Jaque Fourie

Unrelenting verbal energy on the field, Mossie was the foundation on which the Stormers’ defence of yesteryear was built.

12. Wynand Olivier

Despite the temptation, there’s too much ‘Bulls trophy nostalgia’ to pick anyone else here. He was monumental in our team.

11. Bryan Habana

Particularly during his time at the Bulls. Capable of scoring some spectacular tries, and a true gentlemen to boot.

10. Dan Carter

When the Crusaders were at their toughest, Carter was at his best. Couldn’t be shut down.

9. Fourie du Preez

With conviction, the best player I’ve shared a pitch with.

8. Sergio Parisse

I played two Tests against Italy. You cannot ignore the significance of this man’s output.

7. Schalk Burger

I would have loved to have played with this guy, and not just for the beers afterwards.

6. George Smith

When at Suntory in Japan, Eddie Jones could shop for any loosie in the world. He chose Smith.

5. Victor Matfield

Few players can say they were the best in the world at something. In Vic’s case, his status is indisputable.

4. Bakkies Botha

The hardest I’ve been cleaned was a case of ‘friendly fire’ by Bakkies. He was immense.

3. Martin Castrogiovanni

Rightly called the King of Leicester. Took me for a night out after a game in 2009, from which I’m still recovering.

2. John Smit (c)

I’ve probably played with better hookers, but none who are better national team members.

1. Marcos Ayerza

Springboks vs Leicester 2009, Marcos and Castro spearheaded a scrum which sent our entire front row back to SA with injuries.
