De Wit setback for Stormers

The Stormers have suffered an injury blow ahead of Super Rugby after new signing Steph de Wit broke his ankle in training on Tuesday.

Last week, the Stormers announced that De Wit is one of five new recruits for the upcoming season, with director of rugby Gert Smal labelling the player as a unique signing.

'In Stephan de Wit we have a genuine openside flank who plays towards the ball, which should bring some balance to our loose forwards,' said Smal.

However, De Wit announced the injury news via Twitter on Wednesday.

'Gutted that I broke my ankle yesterday. [On the] road to recovery now,' he tweeted.

It is unclear how long De Wit will be sidelined for, and whether the Cape franchise will add a replacement to their squad.

The Stormers start their Super Rugby campaign against the Bulls at Newlands on 25 February.
