Faf de Klerk says he was left surprised by the reaction to the South African-flag underwear he wore following the World Cup final.
The Springbok scrumhalf set social media alight when he wore nothing but his underpants branded with the South African flag in the Bok change room after their Webb Ellis Cup win in Yokohama.
De Klerk took his official celebration photograph in the Speedo and continued to wear it when he met the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, who was treated to a uniquely South African welcome when he visited the change rooms after the final.
The 28-year-old told Sport24 that he did not expect the response, but was happy that people were able to make light of it.
‘I was massively surprised,’ De Klerk said. ‘I didn’t do it intentionally, but the response has been great. It’s created a nice vibe and the people are enjoying it, so I’m all for that. It’s all for fun.’
De Klerk added that there isn’t anything special about the Speedo and that a number of Bok players also play matches in them.
‘There is no massive backstory. I just always play in a South African Speedo when I play for the Springboks. I’ve probably played the last two years with it.’
