Dale College scored four tries to beat Queen’s College 29-10 in King William’s Town on Saturday. DYLAN JACK reports.
The home side received an early blow when loosehead prop Masivuye Mafengana was yellow-carded for tip-tackling a player after the whistle had gone.
However, Dale were able to make the game stop-start and run down the clock, taking an early lead through a penalty from centre Siphamandla Krweqe.
Queen’s hit back as wing Liyabona Maku found space out wide and handed off a tackler to score in the corner.
Dale continued to have the best of the opportunities and eventually made it count via flyhalf Ikho Putini, who threw a dummy and sprinted through a gap to take a 10-5 half-time lead.
Dale made an excellent start to the second half as Putini’s good run brought them into the Queen’s 22 before wing Mzwamazizi Ngalo reached over to score.
Minutes later, Ngalo picked up his brace as some good hands from the Dale forwards released him out wide to sprint clear and dot down.
Queen’s hit back through lock Chumani Gatyeni, who was just able to ground the ball on the line, but Dale added a further try when fullback Emile Matsinya intercepted a pass and ran from inside his half to seal the victory.
Dale – Tries: Ikho Putini, Mzwamazizi Ngalo (2), Emile Matsinya. Conversions: Siphamandla Krweqe (3). Penalty: Krweqe.
Queen’s – Tries: Liyabona Maku, Chumani Gatyeni.
