‘CT deserves better than Newlands’

Executive mayor Patricia de Lille has confirmed the city council are locked in negotiations with SA Rugby to host a Springbok Test match at the Cape Town Stadium.

De Lille, speaking at a media briefing on the eve of the Cape Town Sevens tournament, says all rugby matches ought to be played at the lavish stadium, which was initially built for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

'We are busy negotiating with SA Rugby to host a Springbok Test, which should have happened long ago,' De Lille commented.

'The reality is, most locals are rugby supporters and I think they deserve a better stadium than Newlands. Ideally, we want all future rugby games to be played at the Cape Town Stadium,' she added.

De Lille also confirmed a deal has been brokered to host the South African leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series at the Cape Town Stadium until 2018.
