It’s been confirmed that SuperSport will be broadcasting New Zealand’s domestic rugby competition, which kicks off on 13 June. CRAIG LEWIS reports.
Back on 14 March it was confirmed by Sanzaar that the 2020 Vodacom Super Rugby tournament would be suspended for the foreseeable future as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
After what will be an almost exactly three-month break, though, New Zealand will lead the way with the resumption of a restructured local competition called Super Rugby Aotearoa.
Involving the Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes, Crusaders and Highlanders, the localised tournament will be played over 10 consecutive weeks, with home and away games.
As expected, South African broadcaster SuperSport – who has a strong relationship with Sky Sport NZ – has recently come to an official agreement to also provide live broadcasts of the competition.
However, it will require an early start for SA fans, with New Zealand’s Saturday matches all kicking off at 07:05am (SA time), while the Sunday matches get under way at 05:05am (SA time).
The news will nonetheless be welcomed by South African rugby followers, who are undoubtedly desperate for the opportunity to enjoy live rugby once again.
