Former Lions coach Johan Ackermann will be leaving English club Gloucester to take up a role with the NTT Docomo Red Hurricanes in Japan.

Ackermann has been plying his trade in England since 2017, and although he signed a new contract to extend his tenure as Gloucester head coach last year, the former Springbok will instead head to Japan.

Some rumours suggested there have been whispers of discontent in the Gloucester camp, with the English club lying ninth in the Premiership, with just four wins from 13 games before competition was halted.

Upon announcing his exit, Ackermann said: ‘Being head coach of Gloucester Rugby has been a tremendous privilege for me and I have loved every minute of it.

‘Working with such a fantastic group of players and coaches has been a great experience. I would especially like to thank Martin for the faith he has shown in me.

‘His support and friendship have meant a lot to me. Gloucester Rugby fans are a truly unique group and I will always cherish the memories I have of being at Kingsholm. I wish the club nothing but the best.’
