Hooker Dane Coles will captain the Hurricanes in the 2016 Vodacom Super Rugby tournament, with TJ Perenara as vice-captain.
The 28-year-old takes over the captaincy from former All Blacks teammate Conrad Smith, who is now playing for Pau in the French Top 14.
Coach Chris Boyd says Coles was selected as the new squad leader after consultation with Smith, who recommended the hooker.
'The guy is deeply respected by the players here and his heart is totally committed to our club,' Boyd said.
Coles admitted that his new role came as a surprise, but that he is ready for the challenge.
'Funny where the rugby journey takes you, I never thought I'd be a captain but yeah, I can admit to myself that I've definitely come a long way. I had a few bumps on the road to get to where I am, but I've definitely learned from those lessons,' said Coles.
