The Chiefs were made to work hard for a 21-19 win over the Reds in a warm-up match in Brisbane on Friday.
Both sides scored three tries, but it was Reds wing Filipo Daugunu’s missed conversion that proved the difference.
The visitors opened the scoring in the second minute through fullback Shaun Stevenson, which was followed by a try to centre Bailyn Sullivan.
The score remained 14-0 for the rest of the first half as both sides turned over the ball at regular intervals.
The Reds hit back in the 49th minute when prop Harry Hoopert burrowed his way over the line, and scrumhalf Tate McDermott then caught the Chiefs defence napping with a quick tap from 5m out. Daugunu’s conversion levelled the scores with 20 minutes to play.
The deadlock didn’t last long, as fullback Tyler Campbell crossed for the visitors’ third converted try just minutes later.
The hosts quickly replied with a try of their own through prop Ruan Smith, but the crucial conversion was missed.
