The UAR has confirmed that former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has joined Argentina’s coaching staff for the upcoming Rugby Championship.
Cheika’s appointment as an ‘external consultant’ to Los Pumas, marks a reunion for him and head coach Mario Ledesma, who was an assistant to Cheika at the Wallabies for three years.
Ledesma confirmed he had proposed the plan to Cheika earlier this year and was met with immediate interest, with the former Wallabies coach since helping with logistics and tactical advice ahead of their visit.
‘We agreed from the first moment … he always liked Argentine rugby a lot,’ Ledesma said.
‘It is an excellent opportunity to continue learning all because he is a person who thinks a lot about things outside the box, who has an innovative and super creative vision, different from that of many coaches that I’ve come across.’
The 2020 Rugby Championship will be played exclusively in Australia over the course of six weeks in November and December.
The twelve-match competition will have two fixtures per Saturday starting from 7 November when Los Pumas will face world champions South Africa in the opening match.
