Cheetahs confirm Thomson signing

The Cheetahs have confirmed the signing of former Junior Springbok flyhalf Brandon Thomson as part of their official squad update on Monday.

Thomson, who has been playing for the Glasgow Warriors since 2017, has joined on a two-year contract until 2022.

The 25-year-old, who also made seven appearances for the Stormers, has been signed as a replacement for Tian Schoeman, who left the Cheetahs to take up a contract with Bath in the English Premiership.

Thomson was named in the Cheetahs squad as the Bloemfontein franchise provided an update on Monday, with new signings Alulutho Tshakweni, Jean Droste, Schalk Ferreira and Rynier Bernardo also named.

Meanwhile, former Springbok flank Jacques Potgieter has landed in Bloemfontein to begin his trial with the team.

The 34-year-old has been given a two-month trial period during which he will be looking to prove his fitness after falling short in recent tests. Potgieter, who also doubles down at lock, has not played any first-class rugby since early in 2019 when he was at Toulon.

If he successfully proves his fitness, Potgieter could earn a short-term contract, making the Cheetahs the sixth team he has played for after stints with the Kings, Sharks and Vodacom Bulls in South Africa, the Waratahs in Australia, Munakata Sanix Blues in Japan and Toulon in France.

Potgieter also played three Test matches for the Springboks in 2012.
