The Cheetahs are exploring the possibility of joining competitive leagues in Russia or the USA following their expulsion from the expanded PRO16.
SA Rugby has confirmed its plan to enter the Vodacom Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers in the PRO16 as of next season, at the expense of the Cheetahs and Kings, who had joined the competition in 2017.
But according to a report on Netwerk24, the Free State Rugby Union is already looking at different options for the senior team’s playing future. It is believed the two most viable options are joining either Russia or the USA. If they do join a competition abroad, the Cheetahs and their sponsors will fund their participation.
The Cheetahs are expected to get more clarity on about playing in Russia and, should the move get the go-ahead, there’s a strong possibility they will also be able to compete in the European Shield and/or European Challenge Cup.
