The Cheetahs' second-string side beat NMMU 31-26 in a practice game played in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday.
The men from the Free State led 19-14 at half-time, although the Madibaz would push the much-fancied visitors right up until the final whistle, scoring a pushover try with five minutes remaining.
Boom Prinsloo, Cornal Hendricks, Caylib Oosthuizen, Rayno Benjamin and Raymond Rhule scored the Cheetahs' five tries.
The Cheetahs' first-choice side will play the Kings in PE on Saturday.
