Flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis has announced his retirement from the sport on Wednesday.

Catrakilis, who last played for the Kings in the PRO14, confirmed via his social media platforms that he has quit the sport effective immediately.

‘The journey was incredible. I wouldn’t change a thing or person I encountered. Thank you Rugby, see you on the other side,’ Catrakilis said.

The 30-year-old started his career at the Lions before moving to French giants Racing Metro (now Racing 92) in 2009 for a season. He then returned to South Africa where he played for Western Province and the Stormers from 2011 to 2015, with a short loan spell at the Kings in 2013.

Between 2015 and 2019, Catrakilis spent two seasons each at Montpellier in France and Harlequins in England before returning to the Kings last year.

Catrakilis is a two-time Currie Cup winner with Western Province (2011, 2014), won the Varsity Cup with the UCT Ikey Tigers in 2011 and was part of the Montpellier squad that clinched the European Challenge Cup in 2015.
