The Kobe Kobelco Steelers have confirmed the departure of All Blacks great Dan Carter after his two-year stint at the club.
Carter had already bid rugby fans in Japan a subtle farewell in mid-April via Instagram, paying tribute to his brief time with the Steelers at the end of the truncated domestic season.
On Friday, the Steelers released a statement via the club’s website confirming Carter’s departure.
The three-time World Rugby Player of the Year made a big impact in Kobe, leading the club to the Top League championship in 2018-2019, a first title since the 2003-2004 campaign. That first season also saw Carter named Top League MVP and Top Kicker.
Meanwhile, Suntory Sungoliath have bade farewell to their marquee player, Matt Giteau, as well as their New Zealand import Joe Wheeler.
This 2019-2020 season was cut short after only six rounds were played due to the coronavirus pandemic.
