Dan Carter looks likely to feature in the match-day squad for the All Blacks' game against Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Carter served as a waterboy during his side's 24-21 win at Twickenham over the weekend, but is expected to make a return to the playing field against Scotland.

It's been a difficult year for the 32-year-old, whose return from a six-month sabbatical was cut short after breaking his leg in the Super Rugby final. He looked comfortable upon his return to international rugby, playing 30 minutes against the USA, but coach Steve Hansen decided that the match against England had come too soon after his return.

However, following Aaron Cruden and Beauden Barrett's wayward kicking display against England – they missed five shots at goal between them – Carter could well find himself back in the pivot position this weekend.

All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster has admitted as much ahead of the game against Scotland.

'We are keen for Dan to get significant game time on this tour,' Foster told the New Zealand Herald. 'Whether he's starting or comes off the bench, he's likely to be there in some form.'

The All Blacks will name their side on Thursday for the match against Scotland, a side they have never lost to in the 109-year history of the fixture.
