Burger: Boks were not going to die wondering

The Springboks lift the World Cup Springboks
Published on November 2, 2019

Schalk Burger says the Springboks put in the performance of the tournament to claim the World Cup in a 32-12 final win on Saturday.

The Springboks claimed their third World Cup with a dominant performance against England in Yokohama.

In his immediate reaction on SuperSport, former Bok flank Burger said the Springboks dominated every facet of play in the final.

‘What a privilege. I am lost for words. What a privilege. Thank you for the Springboks,’ Burger said. ‘I thought England’s performance in the semis was the performance of the World Cup. But this performance was off the charts.

‘It was just our attitude. We came out there and we realised that we were not going to die wondering. We dominated every single facet of play today. Physicality and set pieces. When it came to playing rugby, our outside backs shone and scored tries. The energy in that group was surreal. That was the most pleasurable watch. I’ve lost my voice a bit.’

While discussing the game with the SuperSport panel, Burger praised the way the Springboks used their turnover opportunities created by their physicality in defence.

‘It was down to No 9 and 10. Our 9 and 10 were better than theirs today. We did not have that endeavour in the semi-final and that’s why it was so cagey. It was the same with the other turnover. Pieter-Steph made a beautiful pass to Cheslin Kolbe and we all know how dangerous Cheslin can be. He realises he has Marler, a prop, outside him and puts on the feet.

‘But that all stemmed from how physical we were. When the Boks play with that brutality, they are a horrible nation to play against. Nobody wanted to play a final against us. It was just brutal.’
