Blue Bulls scrumhalf Embrose Papier scores Bulls look to raise the standard

Pote Human has urged his Vodacom Blue Bulls team to deliver an improved performance against Griquas at Loftus on Saturday.

The Bulls slumped to heavy defeats in the opening two encounters of the season by Western Province and the Cheetahs, respectively, before struggling to a 25 -17 victory against the Pumas last weekend.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Human said the Bulls have to perform at a higher standard if they are to overcome a physical Griquas side.

‘Griquas have a big pack of forwards. They dominated both the Sharks and Pumas up front,’ said Human. ‘Our performance wasn’t up to standard in our first two games. We did well against the Pumas and the team is improving, so we are hoping to improve on last weekend’s performance.

‘We lost possession in contact and there were too many knock-ons, so our handling definitely needs to improve. Also, in terms of our discipline, we need to avoid conceding turnovers in the opposition’s 22. So we’ve worked hard at training this week to improve those areas and convert our opportunities.’

Human also credited his counterpart Brent Janse van Rensburg for the playing style he has implemented at Griquas since joining as head coach towards the end of last year.

‘They seem to be playing less rugby. They’ve got a very good kicking game, so we know what to expect against them. They keep possession well in your half and use their outside backs effectively.’

The match kicks off at 5:15pm.
