Brumbies punish Jaguares

The Brumbies clinched a 39-15 bonus-point victory against the Jaguares in Buenos Aires on Saturday.

Following last weekend’s scrappy win over the Kings, the Brumbies produced an impressive six-try performance to overcome the Jaguares and end their two-match tour on a high.

The Jaguares started strongly and led 10-7 after the opening quarter, thanks to Tomas Lavanini’s converted try and a penalty. Sam Carter’s try from the back of a rolling maul accounted for the Brumbies’ points.

The momentum then swung in the Brumbies’ favour and fullback Tom Banks completed a first-half double, while teammate Wharenui Hawera booted a penalty as they led 20-10 at the interval. It went from bad to worse for the hosts, when captain Agustin Creevy was yellow-carded for cynical play, with the Brumbies on attack.

The Brumbies’ relentless pressure on the Jaguares’ defence didn’t let up in the second half. Wing Henry Speight surged through a gap for another try to extend his team’s tally, before replacement wing Andrew Muirhead grabbed a brace to seal the result.

Replacement lock Guido Petti did breach the Brumbies’ line for a score late in the match, but his effort was a mere consolation for the Jaguares, who are now 18 points behind the second-placed Sharks in the Africa 2 conference standings.
