Paarl Boys’ High inflicted a 29-16 defeat on their Winelands rivals Paul Roos at Brug Street Stadium in Paarl on Saturday.
Boishaai had a score to settle in this fixture after Paul Roos claimed bragging rights in this derby with an emphatic 44-8 win at home in Stellenbosch last year. And while it was a much tighter affair this time around, Boishaai managed to achieve exactly what they set out to do.
And the result was largely down to the excellent game management of the home side’s flyhalf Kian Meadon, and the excellent hard work of the forward pack, who dominated the set pieces and the contact battle.
Paul Roos simply had no answer to Boishaai’s dominant physicality, and their defence was shown up as well, with the opposition’s backline punching holes in their line at will.
Boishaai led 13-9 after the first half, courtesy of a try from hard-running centre Quan Horn and two penalties from Kian Meadon. The highly rated Kade Wolhuter slotted the visitors’ three penalties.
The second half produced more action as Paul Roos gained some confidence to make a contest of it.
Fullback Jacques Rosseau nailed a 52m penalty from an angle, before a well-timed grubber kick from Meadon sat up for No 8 Gideon van Wyk, who surprisingly outpaced the Paul Roos backs to score and put the hosts 21-9 up.
Paul Roos came back strongly and were rewarded with a try of their own, but another long-range kick from Rosseau, and scores by centre Luke Burger and wing Angelo Osch, who went on a searing run en route to his try, sealed a deserved triumph for Paarl Boys’ High.
