Sharks coach Sean Everitt has strongly affirmed that playmaker Curwin Bosch will be utilised as a flyhalf during the 2020 Vodacom Super Rugby season.
Despite coming through Eastern Province’s youth ranks as a flyhalf, Bosch has constantly shifted between the No 10 and 15 jersey during his time at the Sharks.
Robert du Preez’s return to Durban from Western Province meant that the 22-year-old struggled to get a consistent run at flyhalf and he largely played a supporting role to Du Preez during the 2019 Vodacom Super Rugby season.

The Sharks have lost a bit of depth at fullback with Rhyno Smith, Courtney Winnaar and Leolin Zas all opting to leave the franchise for the Cheetahs, Kings and Stormers, respectively. That leaves 21-year-old Aphelele Fassi, who has come through strongly over the last two years, as the senior fullback, while wing Lwazi Mvovo has also played a good deal of rugby at 15.
However, in an interview with SuperSport, Everitt confirmed that the days of Bosch being asked to constantly switch positions are done as he wants to fight for a place in the Springbok squad.
‘If we have an injury at fullback I will ask Boeta Chamberlain or Lwazi Mvovo to play there before I’d ask Curwin to – we want him to specialise as a flyhalf,’ Everitt said. ‘Curwin has a real spring to his step at the moment. He has extended his stay with us by another two years and he is extremely motivated. He wants to stake a strong claim to be the Springbok flyhalf.’
