Curwin Bosch has learned a lot in a season where he hasn’t been entirely happy with his personal form, writes CRAIG LEWIS.
Largely as it has been for the Sharks in 2018, this season has been filled with ups and downs for Bosch, who has shown glimpses of his immense potential, while at other times he has battled with inconsistency.
From the moment Bosch burst into the Sharks’ senior ranks as a fresh-faced teenager who had starred for the Junior Springboks, high expectations have followed his every move.
Last year, the versatile back made his Bok debut off the bench, while he started in the one-off Test against Wales this past June, before later being released from the national squad.
Bosch’s focus has now shifted back to Super Rugby, with the youngster telling SARugbymag.co.za that the Sharks remain hopeful of overcoming the Jaguares this Saturday to possibly sneak into the playoffs.
On a personal note, however, the 21-year-old was candid when asked to reflect on his own performances.
‘I’m not completely happy with the way I’ve performed this season, I don’t think it’s been to the best of my ability, to be honest. There’s certainly room to improve in terms of my all-round game, but having said that, it’s my first full Super Rugby season at fullback, so I’ve definitely learned a lot.’

Not that long ago, it did appear as if Bosch was starting to settle at flyhalf, but he has predominantly worn the Sharks’ No 15 jersey this year.
‘Playing at fullback has provided the opportunity for me to work on my running game, and to understand the space at 15,’ he reflected. ‘I’d have loved to have a run at flyhalf at some point this year, but it’s been a big learning curve [at fullback] and I believe it will add value to my rugby going forward.’
The Sharks are set to take on the Jaguares at 5.15pm this Saturday, and will need to beat them, while hoping for a Highlanders win over the Rebels to make it through to the knockout stage.
