Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has confirmed that the calf injury sustained by prop Trevor Nyakane in the match against the All Blacks is serious. JON CARDINELLI in Yokohama reports.
Erasmus and captain Siya Kolisi bemoaned the team’s mistakes in the wake of South Africa’s 23-13 loss to New Zealand in Yokohama on Saturday. While Erasmus went out of his way to give the All Blacks credit, he wasn’t happy with the Boks’ discipline or the way that they responded to the opposition’s kicking game.
The loss should force a change to the Bok approach in the coming weeks. There may also be a change to the first-choice 23, with news that Nyakane has picked up an injury.
‘Trevor Nyakane’s injury looks fairly serious,’ Erasmus said. ‘We had a problem at the end with injuries and couldn’t use the bench the way we wanted to. Cheslin Kolbe and Pieter-Steph du Toit suffered from cramps.’
Apart from Frans Malherbe, who started the match against the All Blacks at No 3, the Boks have another tighthead in the squad in Vincent Koch.
