The Springboks cruised their way to victory over African neighbours Namibia despite a few soft moments throughout the World Cup clash. JOHN GOLIATH rates the Boks.
Warrick Gelant 7
The Vodacom Bulls man really tried to get involved in the action from the fullback position. Was instrumental in quite a few of the Boks’ tries with slick offloads and good support play.
S’bu Nkosi 6
Would have liked to have a few more chances with ball in hand, but the play didn’t really come his way on the night. Looked dangerous with the ball and also chased kicks with vigour.
Lukyanyo Am 7
Decent outing for the Bok No 13. His support play was good and showed what he can do when he managed to get some space in the second half. Didn’t have a lot to do on defence.
Frans Steyn 7
He is definitely carrying a few kilos, but seemed to relish his first start of 2019. Put in a big shift, which was epitomised by his work rate around the park. He also defended strongly and kicked well out of hand.
Makazole Mapimpi 8
The finisher rounded off a few good opportunities with his speed and his eye for the tryline. He also chased well and put a lot of pressure on the Namibians from box kicks.
Elton Jantjies 5
Not the greatest outing for the Bok flyhalf. Hit the post with an easy conversion, while he kicked a penalty over the deadball line. His distribution was a bit of a mixed bag on the night.
Herschel Jantjies 7
His service off the base was the normal high standard, and set up Mapimpi’s try with a good bullet pass (although it looked a bit forward). His box kicks were really impressive, as it gave the Boks the chance to compete for the ball in the air.
Schalk Brits 7
The hooker seemed to enjoy his outing at the back of the scrum. Had a chance to display his quick feet and ability to offload in the tackle. Also scored a try after a big maul by the Boks.
Francios Louw 8
It was nice for ‘Flo’ to stretch his legs a bit after coming off the bench in most of the Boks’ Tests this year. Was fantastic at the breakdown, trying to steal Namibian ball and protecting the Boks’ possession.
Kwagga Smith 6
Had a rather quiet game by his standards. Grafted hard in the tight loose, but didn’t quite have an impact with ball in hand. This was the game he should have used to try to force his way into the team for the big matches.
Lood de Jager 9
It’s unbelievable to think that De Jager isn’t among the Boks’ first-choice locks at the moment. Was solid in the air when Namibia kicked off (which was quite frequent) and bossed the lineout. He was also very good with ball in hand and in the tackle.
RG Snyman 7
Really took advantage of the Boks’ physical dominance and could show his prowess with ball in hand. The Boks really need to use his carrying and offloading ability a lot more in the big matches.
Vincent Koch 8
Dominated the Namibian scrum from the first minute to his departure early in the second half. He will be elevated to the 23-man squad for the big matches, and this outing will give him a lot of confidence.
Bongi Mbonambi 8
Probably thought he was going to score many more tries behind a rampant Bok maul. Managed to get a brace, but also worked his socks off around the park. His carrying and tackling were standout features.
Tendai Mtawarira 8
The Beast also played his part in the Boks’ dominant scrum and lineout. He also worked well around the park and made a few good runs. There is definitely still a lot of petrol left in his tank.
Notable substitute
Siya Kolisi 7
The more minutes the Bok captain gets under the belt the better. His carrying was strong and his support play was good. Scored a try shortly after taking the field.
