Springbok lock Jason Jenkins is set to sign for PRO14 finalists Munster ahead of the 2021-22 season despite being targeted for a return to the Vodacom Bulls.

Jenkins is currently playing for Toyota Verblitz in Japan, having joined the team last year after a short stint with the Bulls in Super Rugby Unlocked.

Bulls head coach and director of rugby Jake White had expressed interest in getting Jenkins to return to Pretoria on a longer-term deal after the current Top League season, given how impressive he was in his second stint with the team.

However, reports in Ireland suggest that Jenkins has decided to further his career with Munster, who were finalists in the recently completed PRO14 season.

The potential of a second-row combination of RG Snyman and Jenkins could be a mouthwatering one for fans of the Irish club. Snyman has played just once since he completed a move from Japan, having injured his knee in his first game for the club. However, the 2019 World Cup winner is on the road to recovery and is still contracted to the club for next season.

Munster also count Ireland internationals Tadhg Beirne and Jean Kleyn as their other second-row options.

Should Jenkins complete the move to Munster it could put him on a trajectory to face his former side, with the Bulls among the four South African teams set to play in the upcoming Rainbow Cup and an expanded PRO16 tournament.
