The Wildeklawer and Grey High festivals confirmed who’s who among South Africa’s top schools and set things up nicely for the weekend ahead. THEO GARRUN reports.
Grey College, Glenwood, Paul Roos and the two Paarl schools – Paarl Boys’ and Paarl Gim – all beat top-class opposition in Kimberley and will all be involved in big games this weekend.
Four of the clashes will involve last weekend’s big winners, including the two teams that have consistently been the best in the land: Paarl Boys’ and Grey College will be meeting in Paarl, while Paul Roos will host Paarl Gim in Stellenbosch.
Boishaai beat Waterkloof 53-10 and Affies 19-14 at the Wildeklawer festival, while Grey College defeated Drostdy 47-5 and Monument 19-14.
Paul Roos got two 60-point wins over Pretoria opposition – Menlo Park and Waterkloof – while Paarl Gim beat Monument 34-31 and Welkom Gym 24-7.
Another side to record two good wins at the Wildeklawer festival was Glenwood. They beat Stellenberg and Outeniqua and travel to Pretoria this weekend to face a much-improved Affies. The Pretoria side beat Boland Landbou in Kimberley and then ran Paarl Boys’ close, going down 19-14 in the end.

The schools playing at the Grey High Festival might have been of a slightly lower standard but there was nevertheless some excellent rugby on display.
The most impressive sides on show were Selborne College and the hosts, Grey High. Selborne knocked off Joburg’s top two English schools, KES (29-3) and Jeppe (19-3), while Grey thrashed St John’s 58-3 and then beat KES 35-17.

They will both be involved in big Eastern Cape derbies this weekend. Selborne take on Dale College in the Border decider, while Grey travel to Queen’s College.
Monument will be looking to get on the winning track following their two defeats at Wildeklawer when they meet Menlo Park in the final of the Tuks Series in Pretoria on Saturday.
There are some big local derby games this weekend. In Grahamstown, St Andrew’s College host neighbours Graeme College, SACS take on Bishops in Cape Town, and in the KZN Midlands, Michaelhouse will host the first leg of their annual double-header against Hilton.

Other fixtures this weekend include Jeppe vs St Benedict’s, KES vs Maritzburg College, Parktown vs Northwood, Pretoria Boys’ vs St Alban’s, HTS Drostdy vs Hermanus and Wynberg vs Boland Landbou.
