With the first three rounds of the Varsity Cup out of the way, should unbeaten CUT be considered as fresh challengers for the 2021 title?
CUT have been the surprise package in the first week of the tournament, as they won all three of their opening games and are currently joint top of the table with UP-Tuks and the UCT Ikey Tigers, but boast a superior points differential.

Even though there are still tougher matches against the like to come, the Bloemfontein university is still on track for their best-ever Varsity Cup season. Finishing in the top four itself would be a major achievement, given that CUT are more used to finishing in the bottom two since their promotion from the Varsity Shield in 2014.
Still, the likes of regular favourites UP-Tuks, UCT and Maties should not be counted out, especially given that they have a superior squad depth to some of the other universities.
As previously stated, UP-Tuks and UCT are unbeaten, and while they lost their opening match to UCT, Maties got their campaign back on track by winning their next two fixtures.
