Blitzboks survive Wales scare

Wales missed a last-gasp conversion as the Blitzboks held on for a dramatic 12-10 win in their second pool game at the London Sevens on Saturday.

What a game this was. Wales were cruelly denied what would have been a deserved draw when a last-minute try went unconverted, handing the Blitzboks their second win of the day.

Luke Morgan's third-minute try separated the sides at half-time, but Blitzboks captain Phillip Snyman led from the front in the second half, scoring two tries to give his side a handy 12-7 lead.

From there, the momentum shifted in favour of the world champions. Wales defended with all their might and when Rosco Speckman threw a wild pass close to the tryline, with time almost up on the clock, Owen Jenkins stuck out a hand and brilliantly intercepted the ball. He ran the length of the field to score at the other end.

But, as they did against Kenya earlier in the day, the Blitzboks tracked back in numbers to cut off Jenkins from running around to score behind the posts, which made the conversion trickier. And their determination paid off as the conversion went past the left upright, consigning Wales to a heartbreaking defeat.

The Blitzboks take on the USA in their final pool game at 18:30 (SA time).
