The Blitzboks beat Australia 19-17 on Saturday to end day one at the Paris Sevens unbeaten and set up a Cup quarter-final clash against Samoa.
With this win, the Blitzboks have now set the record as the only side to emerge as pool winners at all 10 tournaments in one season.
South Africa were quick out of the blocks as playmaker Justin Geduld stepped off his left foot to split the defence for a try 22 seconds after the kickoff. The Blitzboks were dominant in the early stages and doubled their advantage when JC Pretorius went on bulldozing run for a second try.
Going behind 14-0 didn’t sit well with the Australians, who needed to win to advance to the Cup quarters. They hit back with two unconverted tries to move within two points just before the interval.
The second half witnessed fewer tries, as both sides could only muster one more touchdown. Impi Visser pulled off a superb finish right on the touchline when he balanced himself to stay in the field of play and dragged a tackler over the line with him to score.
The Springbok Sevens’ defeat of Australia means Kenya progress to the quarter-finals as Pool B runners-up.
The South Africa’s match against Samoa is at 12:34pm on Sunday.
