Captain Siviwe Soyizwapi scored a brace as the Blitzboks thrashed Scotland 36-10 in their opening match at the Singapore Sevens on Saturday.
After their disappointing performance at the Hong Kong Sevens last weekend, Neil Powell’s side had to start this tournament strongly, considering they are in the same pool as rivals Fiji.
And they did just that, running in six tries to brush Scotland aside.
Scotland struck first through Max McFarland, but the Springbok Sevens responded when Werner Kok took care of the last defender before executing a beautifully-timed pass to Branco du Preez for the try. Ten seconds later, Kok was in for the Blitzboks’ second as he collected the restart and raced away.
Going behind in that fashion didn’t deter Scotland, whose stubborn resistance was rewarded. They stayed patient on attack, carefully taking the ball through the phases and ultimately McFarland went over in the corner to reduce the deficit to two heading into the break.
The floodgates opened in the second half with the Blitzboks chalking up 24 unanswered points. Impi Visser extended their advantage, followed by Soyizwapi’s brace.
Rookie Angelo Davids, who only made his debut a week ago, came on in the 12th minute and fittingly scored his first Blitzboks try to round off the game.
