Beauden Barrett was named World Rugby Player of the Year in Monaco on Sunday, while Rieko Ioane claimed the Breakthrough award.
Barrett was nominated along with Owen Farrell (England and British & Irish Lions), Israel Folau (Wallabies), Ioane (All Blacks) and Maro Itoje (England and Lions), but the New Zealand flyhalf ultimately clinched the top award for the second year in a row.
Earlier in the night, Ioane was named the Breakthrough Player of the Year, which saw the winger see off the nominations of Argentina’s Emiliano Boffelli and French centre Damian Penaud.
In other big awards from the night, England’s Eddie Jones secured the World Rugby Coach of the Year award, while New Zealand’s Black Ferns were named Team of the Year.
Unfortunately from a South African perspective, Blitzboks star Rosko Specman lost out to American Perry Baker, who claimed the Sevens Player of the Year award. He also saw off the challenge from Fiji’s Jerry Tuwai.
New Zealand’s Michaela Blyde took home the Women’s Sevens Player of the Year award, while fellow Kiwi, Portia Woodman, won the Women’s Player of the Year award.
Argentina’s Joaquin Tuculet claimed the Irpa Try of the Year award for his effort against England after winning some 14,000 votes from fans on World Rugby’s Twitter channel.
