Bismarck hints at possible Cheetahs return

Bismarck du Plessis scores a try for Montpellier Bismarck du Plessis
Published on August 31, 2020

Former Springbok hooker Bismarck du Plessis says he would love to return to South Africa to finish his playing career at the Cheetahs.

Du Plessis, who plies his trade in France for super club Montpellier, chatted about the possibility of rejoining the Cheetahs in an interview with OFM.

‘With the Covid-19, all these rules and regulations, a lot of plans have changed in the business and rugby worlds,’ Du Plessis said.

‘We’ve also had to change our plans a lot, but look, I really love that Cheetahs jersey. I played my first game for them in 2003, when Rassie Erasmus still played for them. So, a person never knows what might happen, but at this stage, we are still happy here [at Montpellier].’

Earlier this year, Du Plessis signed a new two-year deal with Montpellier until 2022, which does make a possible Cheetahs swansong somewhat unlikely.

Yet any possible future move to the Cheetahs could have the 36-year-old follow in the footsteps of Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn, who were both Du Plessis’ teammates at the Sharks and Monpellier and also attended Grey College in Bloemfontein.

The former Bok hooker says he’d love nothing more than to don the Cheetahs jersey and to play one last game with Pienaar and Steyn.

‘I wish that I could still play at least one game with Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn. We did play a lot of games together and we have so many wonderful memories. I hope those two guys can really excel in the Cheetahs jersey.

‘I will give anything to pull the “Blikore” jersey over my head again and to hear the Cheetahs song and the Harley Davidsons roaring. I would return to the Free State any day.’
