Beauden Barrett will miss the Hurricanes' match against the Chiefs in New Plymouth on Saturday because of a calf strain.
The All Blacks flyhalf, who recently returned from a knee injury, pulled up lame after the team's training session on Monday and has been withdrawn as a precautionary measure.
The Canes will also be without All Blacks midfielder Ma'a Nonu, who is being rested, having played last weekend in honour of the late Jerry Collins.
Coach Chris Boyd has shuffled his team slightly for this week’s clash, bringing No 5 lock Mark Abbott and openside flank Callum Gibbins into the starting lineup, along with blindsider Brad Shields.
James Marshall will run the show from flyhalf, while Nehe Milner-Skudder moves to fullback.
