Beauden Barrett produced a tactical-kicking masterclass in the quarter-final against the Sharks, according to SARugbymag.co.za's Opta-powered stats.

The Hurricanes thrashed the Sharks 41-0 in Wellington on Saturday. While the hosts put six tries past the visitors, the result was the product of an excellent tactical performance.

The torrential conditions demanded a change in approach. The attack-minded Hurricanes were forced to use the boot more liberally. They kicked 43 times on Saturday, and the accuracy of those kicks ensured that they won 70% of the territory.

Barrett boasts a reputation for his attacking play. On this occasion, however, he made just 22 metres with ball in hand, no clean breaks, and just one offload. The flyhalf focused on his kicking game and winning his team territory.

Barrett kicked the ball 16 times on Saturday. On several occasions, he put the ball out within a few metres of the Sharks' tryline.

The Hurricanes flyhalf also used the kick as an attacking weapon, as was seen in the lead-up to the hosts' first try. Barrett's kick-pass to Jason Woodward on the left wing was pin-point accurate. Woodward won the ball in the air, and the Hurricanes took the ball through a couple of phases before scoring.

Despite the challenging conditions, Barrett was successful with four of his six shots on goal.
