Aplon extends Grenoble stay

Fullback Gio Aplon has signed a three-year contract extension to remain at Grenoble until the end of 2020.

Grenoble are in the bottom two on the French Top 14 log and look destined for relegation to the Pro D2, leading to widespread speculation that the bulk of the club's squad could leave at the end of the season.

On Wednesday, the club announced that Aplon, who is their star player, is one of six squad members that have agreed to stay at Grenoble for the forseeable future regardless of the team's financial woes and demotion to a lower division.

'It's a decision I've had to think about. It's about knowing if I still had something to give for the club. I talked to the president and the vice-president and they think I will still offer something on the field over the next few years,' said Aplon.

His compatriot Hendrik Roodt, who has been at Grenoble since 2013, signed a similar deal to stay at the club until the end of 2020.

Meanwhile, veteran Bok wing Bryan Habana confirmed he has entered negotiations with Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal about a possible contract extension.

'I am in talks with Mourad, but it is not decided yet,' said Habana. 'I have loved the last three and a half years. I love the club, the town is very beautiful and I have made a lot of friends and we have won a lot of titles as well.'
