Affies make big statement

Affies claimed a resounding 41-5 victory over EG Jansen on day one of the Kearsney Easter Festival.

A close contest was predicted between the two Gauteng powerhouses, but Affies had other ideas and blew their opponents away in a physical encounter, running in six tries in the process.

EG Jansen scored the opening try from a lineout maul, but three quick tries from midfielder Louritz van der Schyff, fullback Pieter Coetzer and centre Henco Jordaan put the Pretorians 20-5 up at the break.

Affies delivered an even better performance in the second half as EG Jansen tried unsuccessfully to halt the carnage. Wing Jacobus van Staden scored a brace in the space of two minutes, before Van der Schyff ran in his second. Flyhalf Eddie Fouché put the final touches on a polished performance by slotting all three of his conversion attempts.

In the last match of the day, SA's No 1-ranked school Grey College beat HTS Middelburg 22-19 thanks to a late penalty from flyhalf Mario Vieira. Both sides scored three tries.

In other results, Selborne scored eight tries to thump hosts Kearsney 48-7, SACS stunned Dale with a 22-12 victory, Westville edged Menlopark 27-25 in a thrilling encounter, and Glenwood claimed a comfortable 31-0 win against Framesby.
