Ruan Ackermann was in top form as Gloucester hammered Harlequins 29-7, while there were also wins for Exeter, Bristol, Newcastle, Sale and Bath in the English Premiership.

The result is massive in terms of the log, as it puts Gloucester within two points of their top-four rivals Harlequins.

Ackermann, who signed a contract extension with Gloucester just last week, starred for the club. He made 39 running metres, 12 carries, four turnovers, six tackles and scored a try.

Converted tries from Jason Woodward and Ackermann, and a penalty by Billy Twelvetrees, put Gloucester 17-0 up at the break. The visitors went on to score 12 more points in the second half, via tries from Tom Marshall and Danny Cipriani, before Quins got a late consolation try through Nathan Earle.

In other results, the Worcester Warriors fell just short of an excellent comeback as they lost 33-30 to the log leaders the Exeter Chiefs. In a dramatic match, the 11-man Northampton Saints conceded four yellow cards in the last 10 minutes against the Bristol Bears, who went on to score vital try in stoppage time to clinch a 26-24 win.

The Newcastle Falcons upset hosts Wasps 20-19, Faf de Klerk scored a try for the Sale Sharks in their 32-5 triumph over the Leicester Tigers and Bath shocked Saracens 18-9.

Round 16 results:

Harlequins 7 Gloucester 29
Worcester Warriors 30 Exeter Chiefs 33
Northampton Saints 24 Bristol Bears 26
Wasps 19 Newcastle Falcons 20
Sale Sharks 32 Leicester Tigers 5
Bath 18 Saracens 9
