Victor Matfield says the Springboks will get their scrum right on the training field ahead of their match against the Wallabies in Perth next Saturday.
The Bok scrum struggled at times against the Pumas at Loftus and was embarrassed a week later in Salta, with props Gurthö Steenkamp and Jannie du Plessis being substituted in the 46th minute and hooker Bismarck du Plessis in the 52nd. While it improved with Beast Mtawarira, Adriaan Strauss and Frans Malherbe in the front row, Malherbe would suffer a season-ending ankle injury in the 79th minute.
Matfield, who missed both of those Tests through injury, believes they can sort things out next week.
'The set piece is very important for us,' he told journalists before the team’s departure. 'We had a look at it and there is only one way to fix something and that is to go out and fix it on the training field. We had a scrumming session yesterday, today and we’re having one tomorrow and that’s the only way to get it right.
'The guys who are there were outstanding last year, so we know what they can do. It’s just maybe getting one or two things right again in terms of technical points
'The guys are definitely not happy with the way we have scrummed and we want to fix it. I’m sure it will be fine next week.'
