Boland Landbou edge Oakdale

Boland Landbou beat Oakdale Landbou 13-7 in a thrilling Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools encounter on Saturday, while Grey College pipped Paul Roos 25-20.

In a lively affair in Paarl, both sides had opportunities to score first-half tries, but solid defending kept them out.

Scrumhalf Jondré Williams kicked penalties either side of half-time to give Boland Landbou a 6-0 lead, before their flank Johan Lubbe was red-carded.

Then, with Oakdale on the attack, Boland Landbou forced a turnover but failed to clear their lines. From the resulting scrum, Oakdale spread it wide, before flank Armand Heunis changed direction to go untouched under the posts for a converted try.

But the home crowd rose to their feet when fullback Luke Philander set off on a devastating counter from deep inside his own half. Dancing past a number of would-be tacklers, he drew the last man before popping the ball to his support runner, JT Potgieter, for an easy run-in. Williams added the extras for Boland Landbou.

In Bloemfontein, Grey College ended their season on a high when they fought back from 8-0 down to beat Paul Roos 25-20. A try by Michael Meyer followed by Aiydon Cupido’s drop goal accounted for the visitors’ lead, before Julian Jordaan and Henry Immelman put Grey in front with two penalties apiece.

The pair further extended the No 1-ranked team’s advantage with a try and a penalty respectively, while Cupido kept Paul Roos in the hunt with three more penalties of his own. A fleeting run down the left flank by Immelman led to his second try of the afternoon and the winner for Grey.
