In our continued ‘blast from the past’ series, we take a look at the memorable partnership of legendary wings Bryan Habana and JP Pietersen.
It’s not a common or traditional practice to refer to wings as a combination, but at Springbok level, the impact of Habana and Pietersen for the better part of a decade was something to behold.
The two powerful speedsters started in 44 Tests together, forming part of teams that achieved historic successes, such as the 2007 World Cup win and 2009 series victory over the British & Irish Lions.

By comparison, the next set of wings to play a significant sequence of matches together – James Small and Jaques Olivier – featured together in 15 Tests, far fewer than the remarkable partnership of Habana and Pietersen.
Pieter Rossouw and Stefan Terblanche started in 14 Tests together, while Ray Mordt and Gerrie Germishuys paired up in 13 games.
It’s fair to say the feats of Pietersen and Habana may never be surpassed in terms of two wings who played so prominently together.
