Griquas vs Sharks

'Griquas were unlucky. There were just a couple points in it at the end of the game. The Sharks did get on top but it was easier when they were playing against 14 men.

'A couple of their tries came about because the Griquas defence had a back less. There is an argument that you should try keep it as 15 against 15 on the rugby field. You can send the player off for the tip tackle, but bring a replacement on and keep it 15 against 15. Send the guy to a disciplinary committee, fine him and ban him for five games. Punish the individual rather than the whole team.'

Pumas vs Free State Cheetahs

'This Cheetahs side is lacking a number of players. There are six Cheetahs with the Boks, eight Cheetahs have gone overseas and four are injured. This is a bit of a problem for a union like the Cheetahs that doesn't have an enormous amount of money.

'Basically the Pumas have beaten the Cheetahs' Vodacom Cup side. Obviously their second best squad isn't as good as the Pumas' best squad. It was a disappointing performance by the Cheetahs, because now they've fallen behind the Lions, the Sharks and Western Province.'

General thoughts

'The opening round provided great opportunities for a lot of players we didn't know, players who are fighting for Super Rugby contracts next year.

'There were quite a lot of errors, but a lot of positivity. A lot of guys tried to play good rugby and there was plenty pressure and tension in all the matches, because they were quite even matches. I thought the Lions came out really well and played a fantastic game today. They were the standouts for me this weekend.'
