Goosen sets up Racing win

Johan Goosen scored 23 points as Racing beat Bordeaux 28-20, while there were also Top 14 wins for Castres, Montpellier, Grenoble, Pau, La Rochelle and Clermont.

Bordeaux held a slender 10-9 advantage at the break courtesy of a converted try, while Racing’s points came via three Goosen penalties.

The second half saw more action from Racing, who scored three tries. First Antonie Claassen crossed, before Goosen ripped Bordeaux’s defence to shreds. The fullback dotted down twice and knocked over two conversions to guide Racing to a valuable victory.

Meanwhile, Castres beat Toulouse 15-9, to move within a point of a place in the top six. Flyhalf Ben Urdapilleta kicked four penalties before popping over a last-minute drop goal for Castres, while scrumhalf Sebastien Bézy succeeded with three penalties for Toulouse.

On Friday, Montpellier racked up a sixth successive league win when they beat Brive 19-3 in pouring rain.

Elsewhere, Grenoble narrowly beat hosts Oyonnax 27-20, Colin Slade scored a brace as Pau saw off Agen 33-26, and La Rochelle scored two unanswered tries to stun champions Stade Français 21-18.

On Sunday, scrumhalf Morgan Parra coolly converted flank Damien Chouly’s 76th-minute try to hand Clermont a 19-18 win over Toulon in their top-of-the-table clash at the Stade Mayol.
