Nohamba closing in on Sharks starting role

Sharks coach Sean Everitt says scrumhalf Sanele Nohamba is ‘in consideration’ for a place in the starting lineup after his impressive displays.

Nohamba lit up Kings Park when, in his first Vodacom Super Rugby appearance from the bench, he finished off a move from the back of a scrum to ensure the team started with a win over the Vodacom Bulls.

The 21-year-old has certainly worked through the ranks at the Sharks, but experienced something of a mini-breakthrough last year as he went from playing as an impact player for the Junior Springboks to starting for the Sharks in the Currie Cup.

However, he has been named on the bench in the Sharks’ first tour match against the Highlanders in Dunedin on Friday, while the experienced Louis Schreuder remains the starting scrumhalf.

Everitt says he has taken note of Nohamba’s performances and they are discussing when to give him a starting opportunity.

‘He is definitely in consideration to start,’ Everitt said. ‘But I believe in continuity in the team.

‘I know that Sanele played really, really well and had a good Currie Cup. It is definitely one that we are discussing at the moment.’
