Wales coach Warren Gatland is surprised Bok No 8 Duane Vermeulen wasn’t red-carded for an incident of foul play in the quarter-final against Japan.
The incident came early on in the game, and went largely unnoticed until Gatland brought some attention to it just a couple of days before Wales will take on the Springboks in Sunday’s semi-final.
‘We have got to not just match but bring our own physicality in terms of a World Cup semi-final,’ Gatland said on Friday. ‘And that’s important when you play South Africa, they are definitely physical.
‘Against Japan, I was surprised Vermeulen wasn’t red-carded during the game or cited afterwards. Having looked at an incident, we have to match the physicality that South Africa is going to bring.’
Warren Gatland: “I was very surprised Duane Vermeulen was not cited”.
This is the incident. Can’t say I disagree with the Wales coach. pic.twitter.com/iOsMoRp6jH
