Bumper issue: Kolbe soars to new heights
Published on October 22, 2019

Bok superstar Cheslin Kolbe is on the cover of the latest SA Rugby magazine, which is on sale now! Don’t miss out on 156 pages of unrivalled content.

When the content planning began for this bumper edition, we provisionally identified Kolbe as a possible candidate for our cover feature. By the time the Boks had completed their opening World Cup matches, our decision was emphatically made.

In a stunning 80-minute performance against the All Blacks, the mercurial wing made 118m, nine carries and beat 11 defenders. It was a rousing individual effort in a losing cause, but Kolbe once again sent out a reminder of his world-class qualities.

He backed that up with another dazzling two-try display against Italy. In this issue, chief writer Jon Cardinelli sat down with the Bok star in Japan to discuss his remarkable rise to the international stage – proving many doubters wrong along the way.

Also in this issue, SA Rugby magazine investigates the exodus of schoolboy and age-grade players, who are leaving our shores at an increasingly earlier stage. Senior writer Mariette Adams tackles the complex subject in a must-read story.

In another special report, we take an in-depth look at Aphiwe Dyantyi’s rise and fall after the highly regarded wing returned an adverse finding in a doping test. Just over a year ago, Dyantyi was on top of the rugby world after a standout performance in a historic win over the All Blacks in Wellington. Unfortunately, he now faces a long, lonely road ahead.

Make sure you also don’t miss our feature on Bulls wing Cornal Hendricks, who opens up to overseas-based writer Jamie Lyall about his inspiring comeback from a career-threatening heart condition.

There’s this, and much, much more.

On a final, poignant note, we pay tribute to the late Bok great Chester Williams. His untimely death came just after our previous issue had gone to print, but here we fondly remember the legendary World Cup winner who inspired the nation and a future generation of Springboks.

RIP Chester.
