The Springboks comfortably beat Canada to book their place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. JOHN GOLIATH rates the Boks after their win in Kobe.
Damian Willemse 7
His first Test try capped a tidy performance for the Stormers man, who until last week was still in England as a medical joker for Saracens. His positional play was good and he always looked a threat with ball in hand. Even managed to get a breakdown penalty late in the second half.
Warrick Gelant 8
Managed to produce a great finish to score his try in the first half. Also took Elton Jantjies’ crosskick neatly before offloading in the tackle in a move that led to Cobus Reinach’s third try. The kid is a supremely talented footballer and showed his skills when play came his way.
Damian de Allende 7
A rare outing at outside centre went well against opposition not exactly a threat on attack. Produced a decent display and showed some nifty touches with the boot. However, he may have kicked too much and could maybe have had more of a go with ball in hand.
Frans Steyn 8
Also maybe kicked too much (it’s definitely part of the game plan), but got really involved in the play and showed his experience with some good runs and a few nice passes. Definitely looking more energetic and fitter with a few games under the belt.
S’bu Nkosi 7
The Bok flyer adapted nicely to the left-wing position and again showed his finishing ability with a lovely try in the first half. Looked to get his hands on the ball in the second half, but didn’t get a lot of space to really have a full go.
Elton Jantjies 8
Top all-round performance by the Bok flyhalf. His distribution was crisp, especially in the first half, creating a lot of a space for strike runners such as lock RG Snyman. Kicking was really good, out of hand and off the tee.
Cobus Reinach 9
Scored a hat-trick in the first quarter of the game with combination of individual brilliance and great support play. Also kicked really well, while taking the right options in his 50-odd minutes on the park. Definitely put his name in the hat to feature in the playoffs.
Francois Louw 7
Stability and a cool head, Louw was the grafter in the Bok pack. He took most of the kick-offs – which were quite a lot – and managed to secure the ball for the Boks almost every single time. Fought hard at the breakdown and carried well during collisions.
Kwagga Smith 6
A bit of a mixed bag by the Lions flanker. Had a few moments on defence and attack, showing off his sevens skills, but was also too eager – knocked on close to the tryline when he should have rather secured the ball.
Siya Kolisi 6
The Springbok captain got through another 80 minutes without any issues. Had a rather quiet outing, although he did a lot of the donkey work by cleaning out rucks. A few runs in the second half in the wider areas, making some metres.
Franco Mostert 7
Mostert produced a solid display and looked full of running. His competition with Lood de Jager is bringing out the best in him. Saw a lot more of him with ball in hand, while he again covered a lot of ground around the park.
RG Snyman 9
Snyman is a freak of nature and is going to be a superstar in the green and gold in future. Ran through the Canucks like a freight train, with his strong carries. Also runs awesome angles and always looks to offload. To boot, makes great decisions with ball in hand.
Vincent Koch 8
The Bok scrum was just too much for their opponents. Koch was the Boks’ anchor and overpowered his opponent. Also very good with ball in hand, plus put in a few big hits on the day.
Schalk Britz 8
This was possibly the ‘old’ guy’s final match in a Springbok jersey and he capped it off with a youthful performance. Rewarded with a try after a couple of dazzling steps. Also fulfilled his role as hooker and senior player really well.
Thomas du Toit 7
Another player who licked his chops before every scrum. Was really good value at set-piece time, but also did a lot of work around the park – including carrying and cleaning rucks.
Notable substitute

We’re just going to give it to the big man for his first Test try!
