Siya Kolisi says that he was ‘excited but scared’ after a minor earthquake hit the Shizuoka region in the early hours of Wednesday morning. JON CARDINELLI in Shizuoka reports.
Natural disasters are a part of life in Japan. Several typhoons have hit the coast of Honshu since the start of the World Cup. World Rugby has confirmed that log points will be shared in the event of a pool match being cancelled due to inclement weather.
The Boks were given another taste of life on the Pacific Rim when an earthquake rippled through the Shizuoka prefecture in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Players were woken from their beds as their hotel in Omaezaki began to sway and shake.
A few minutes later, however, the earthquake was over.
Kolisi was asked to recount his experience at a media conference on Thursday. It’s been confirmed that the earthquake measured 4.1 on the Richter scale.
‘Cheslin Kolbe was sleeping next to me and snoring, so I thought it was him,’ Kolisi said with a laugh. He subsequently admitted that he and the other players got a bit of a fright.
‘I’ve never experienced anything like that before. I was excited but scared at the same time.’
In 2009, an earthquake measuring 6.4 hit the Shizuoka prefecture. One woman was killed, 134 people were injured and 6,000 buildings were damaged.
