Rugby Australia confirmed that it has held talks with Wallabies star Israel Folau to address his controversial social media posts.
On Thursday, Rugby Australia issued a statement to outline its intention to terminate Folau’s contract following his posts on Instagram and Twitter suggesting that ‘hell awaits homosexuals’ and those guilty of other ‘sins’.
At the time, it was said that RA had been unable to ‘contact [Folau] both directly and via his representatives’, but Folau finally fronted up at Rugby Australia headquarters on Friday.
Rugby Australia stated it would be keeping the details of their discussion private as it considers the next steps, but confirmed that its position on terminating Folau’s contract remains unchanged.
Earlier in the day, Folau looked to be in good spirits after he was spotted at a Sydney cafe with his wife Maria Folau, and appeared to be in discussions with two associates.
Asked by an Australian reporter if he regretted what he said in his posts, and how he was feeling now that his career was ‘all but over’, Folau remained silent and hastily got into a waiting car before being driven away.
