The Golden Lions Rugby Union will investigate an alleged incident of racial abuse that took place during a club match between Wanderers and Roodepoort.
The incident occurred during an U21 match between the sides on 25 April.
‘During the match, Wanderers players reported to their coach that there was verbal racial abuse being directed to the Wanderers players from the Roodepoort spectators and players,’ read a Wanderers statement.
‘After the match is when the verbal [abuse] continued and physical assaults started where Roodepoort players and parents attacked Wanderers black players.
‘The behaviour witnessed on Wednesday night is against the fundamental rules of South African society and does nothing to attract more people to the game, much less the club game.’
The GLRU confirmed that a disciplinary committee, consisting of independent lawyers, has been formed to investigate the incident, after which a statement will be released.
