Kolisi: Papier can handle the pressure

Embrose Papier on Test debut Embrose Papier
Published on November 16, 2018 | Leave a response

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi says he is excited to see what scrumhalf Embrose Papier can do in his first Test start on Saturday.

Having played off the bench in all five of his previous Tests, Papier will wear the No 9 jersey against Scotland at Murrayfield.

Speaking at a press conference in the Scottish capital, Kolisi said the 21-year-old is more than capable of holding his own, even if he is targeted and put under pressure by the hosts.

‘With Duane [Vermeulen] at No 8 and Handré [Pollard] at 10, he has a couple of cool and experienced heads around him. And he has played with Handré before, so it’s not going to be all that different for him,’ Kolisi said.

‘He has done really well for us when he has come on. He makes a big difference, like in the game against England where he played so well.’

PREVIEW: Scotland vs Springboks

Kolisi added that he has full confidence in the youngster’s ability to deal with the pressures of starting a Test match.

‘The forwards are going to have to make sure that he gets go-forward ball so that there is not too much pressure on him, but I know if he is under pressure, he’ll be able to handle it. We’ve seen him do it before in Super Rugby and for the Boks.

‘He is different because he is a running nine, which is awesome. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do.’
